This instrument is often used to detect the flammability of fluff or fur fabrics. The flame spreads rapidly on the surface of the fabric, but the base fabric structure of the fabric does not burn. Its mobile butane burner moves laterally across the fabric surface, detecting the presence of surface flames and recording damage to the base fabric.
